Student Nutrition Department employeesThe Los Lunas Schools Student Nutrition Department is among the statewide winners of the Golden Chile Awards. It honors preschools, schools, and senior centers for purchasing produce and other foods from local farmers and ranchers.

According to the program, it has awarded its highest levels of grants this school year - $1.27 million for schools, $300,000 for preschools and $530,000 for senior centers. Organizations use the funds to establish edible gardens and serve locally grown food in meals and snacks.

Los Lunas Schools Student Nutrition received the Sprout Award for its program. The department purchases the following foods from the local farmers listed here:

Red Doc Farms—Pinto Beans, Honeyloupe, beef
Carrasco Farms—Peppers, squash/zucchini, tomatoes, jalapenos, cucumbers (the calabacitas on Frito Pie day had NM Grown product in them)
Root Farms—Tomatoes, squash/Zucchini, Peppers
Minor Morgan—Green Beans, Tomatoes
Wagner Farms—Watermelon, Canteloupe, Honeydew, Apples, Peaches

Los Lunas Schools and the other statewide winners were recognized during an online ceremony by representatives from the Governor’s Office as well as the Departments of Agriculture, Health, Public Education, Early Childhood Education and Care, and Aging and Long-Term Services for the New Mexico Grown Program.
